Soreca: Independent institutions, key role in democratic governance

TIRANA, April 12 /ATA/ – Ambassador of the EU Luigi Soreca has appealed for more tangible results in performance of independent institutions.

At the meeting with the heads of 21 independent institutions, which report before Parliament of Albania, Soreca said that time is now to see more tangible results. The performance of these institutions is related to each element of state structure.

“Independent institutions are crucial to democratic governance but also to the embodiment of EU values such as: guaranteeing power balance as well as a just and independent judiciary,” Soreca said.

The EU ambassador highlighted the assistance of EU in performance of independent institutions playing a pivotal role for each country.

“EU has welcomed the parliamentary monitoring mechanism and has also seen the steps taken in the past in the framework of this mechanism,” Soreca said.

Soreca added that although progress has been made in a number of areas, there are challenges that have not been addressed yet. For several years now, the annual reports of EC have put the emphasis on capacity building of independent institutions. EC has recommended and supported the strengthening of your institutions’ independence. EU wants to see consistent outcome.
