Bipartisan and all-accepted election reform needed

TIRANA, April 3 /ATA/ – By Maela Marini/ “We are ready to await opposition and discuss the ways for addressing the OSCE/ODIHR recommendations on the table of Committee,” Secretary for Electoral Issues at SP, Damian Gjiknuri, said while speaking about the necessity of extending the deadline for election reform committee.

This has been one of the demands of opposition which has repeatedly complained about electoral processes asking for amendments to the Electoral Code.

Gjiknuri highlighted the contribution of opposition at the outset, although it boycotted this committee later.

Right now, Gjiknuri said, we are facing a new political reality with the previous parliamentary opposition outside parliament and another spinster group from opposition in parliament.

“Electoral reform needs to be bipartisan and all-accepted,” Gjiknuri said adding that no way should we miss out on this opportunity just because the political reality has changed.

“The parliamentary and extra-parliamentary opposition have the same rights. This committee has two co-chairmen, there is also a special opposition representative who has the right to propose and discuss all amendments to the Electoral Code. This is a good opportunity for opposition before the June 30th local elections. If they have proposals pertaining to these elections, they should put them to the table and we are ready to examine them, “Gjiknuri said.
