BoA tightens market supervision

TIRANA, July 7 /ATA/ – Albania’s central bank has tightened its market supervision rules and capacities in a bid to prevent money laundering.

In co-operation with other financial institutions, the Department of Money Laundering Prevention Taxes, the Bank of Albania is committed to conducting joint inspections, mainly focusing on money exchange activities.

Elvin Meka, an economy expert, told ATA that the commitment indicates the central bank’s greater attention to the fight against money laundering.

According to him, these measures are designed to provide a stronger response to one of the factors behind the Europe’s single currency depreciation over the past few months.

“The decision to close down 45 foreign exchange bureaus represents a concrete step and a strong measure put in place by the Bank of Albania, as well as the law enforcement agencies in the fight against money laundering,” he said.
