TIRANA, June 20 /ATA/-Albanian Minister of Interior Fatmir Xhafaj held a meeting with his Belgium counterpart Jan Jambon.
During the meeting, Minister Xhafaj gave a brief resume of the up-to-now achievements in the Ministry of Interior fields of activity.
Xhafaj presented the results of fight against organized crime in the context of “Force of the Law” operation and focused on fight against cannabis aiming at Albania being removed permanently from the map of countries that cultivate cannabis.
Further on, the two ministers discussed on fight against terrorism and violent radicalism as well as issues that have to do with asylum-seeking and irregular migration which have turned into topics of debate in Belgium.
Speaking about the issue of asylum-seeking, Xhafaj emphasized that, “The Ministry of Interior and the structures of the State Police have undertaken several measures for reduction of the number of asylum-seekers and addressing of issues related to irregular migration. Albania, even because of its restricted capacities, has managed to make substantial successes in this direction, but a greater support by the EU partners is required”.
The Belgium minister said that the challenges Albania faces are the same with those of the EU member countries and pointed to terrorism and violent extremism saying that few weeks ago Belgium was hit by these phenomena.
The two ministers emphasized that cooperation between the two countries in the field of security is very good, but there is still room for its intensification in fields of mutual interest./a.g/p.s./
