TIRANA, March 16 /ATA/- Albania’s new Prosecutor General Arta Marku hinted Thursday that along new cases, the prosecutors will reopen probe into previous sensitive cases, including the 2008 deadly explosions at an ammunition disposal factory in the village of Gerdec, near Tirana, and the murder of four protestors during an anti-government protest on Jan. 21, 2011.
In her first televised interview since her election in December, chief prosecutor said that before being a concrete action, justice is procedure.
“There are a number of cases like the Gerdec blast that have dominated the public opinion since the very beginning, since these cases were opened. Many people have expressed their opinion and judgement about progress of these files. I can’t certainly express an opinion right now, but justice is first a procedure and then concrete action, and despite individual or institutional will, if this is not translated into procedure then it is doomed to fail. These cases are being investigated to find out whether there are remaining legal both ordinary and extraordinary means,” Marku said.
Prosecutor General also touched upon the U.S. Ambassador’s statement over the capture of the so-called “big fish”, saying the Prosecutor’s Office is working every day on this issue.
“I would say that investigation is not a campaign. The Prosecutor’s Office is working everyday on big and small files. If there are big fish, it remains to be seen in the future. I’d like to act, rather than to talk,” she said.
Chief prosecutor also confirmed that prosecutors are looking into Russian ties in Democratic Party’s lobbying funds.
