PM Rama: Social assistance is not a solution, employment is our alternative

TIRANA, March 16 /ATA/ – Supporting people in need by replacing pittance with real employment opportunities remains government’s top priority.

Via a Facebook video, Prime Minister Edi Rama brings to the public’s attention the example of a 45-year-old woman from the south-eastern city of Korça, who has recently found stable job in a private enterprise after leaving social welfare program.

“Good morning and through another significant example of our continued daily fight against poverty by providing real employment opportunities rather than pittance, I would like to wish you all a good day,” PM Rama wrote on his Facebook page.

Arta Shkëmbi explains how she found a job with the help of National Employment Service.

“My name is Arta Shkëmbi, 45 years-old. Earlier I used to receive cash welfare benefit amounting to  32 thousand lek. This amount was not making enough to cover our basic needs, since my husband was also jobless. I received help by regional employment service in Korça,” Arta said, adding she now has a job that pays her 250 thousand lek a month.

The Albanian government has launched a new employment program to help people in need to develop skills and find a job, move them off social assistance and put more people into job-training programs.
