Slogans against Albanians in Skopje, MEFA: Macedonian authorities should launch an investigation

Tirana, March 15 /ATA/- The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Albania expresses dismay and condemns the language of hatred and xenophobic slogans towards Albanians on the surrounding walls of Albanians’ Institute of Spiritual and Cultural Heritage in Skopje.

Times and again the cultural institutions that preserve and reflect the Albanian history, tradition, language and culture are intentionally and unacceptably violated through acts intended to sow hatred, divide and incite tensions among communities. As rapprochement and inter-ethnic cohesion have made major steps forward in further consolidation, these acts pose a direct threat to peace, stability and inter-ethnic harmony in the neighboring country. We believe these attacks are confined to a small group of people stirred by extreme nationalist sentiments as well as obstructive actions and harmful rhetoric in the last days from the segments of old politics after the passage of the law on use of Albanian language in Macedonia.

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Albania urges the Macedonian authorities to shed light on this vandal act, launch a thorough investigation and hold accountable the perpetrators of these attacks, which threaten the spirit of co-habitation and harmony in Macedonia and all across the region.
