Public Health Institute: Measles situation under control

TIRANA, March 13 /ATA/-By Z.Tosku/ – Albanian health authorities have taken a series of effective steps to contain the spread of measles after several people contracted the disease as measles cases continue to occur in many European countries.

A vaccination campaign is underway and more than 30 thousand people, including the routine immunisation for children belonging to the age groups of one to five-years old, have been vaccinated under this campaign to ensure the eradication of measles virus.

Dr. Eugena Tomini, an infectious disease specialist at the Public Health Institute, told the Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) on Tuesday that a total of 271 confirmed measles cases have been reported so far across the country, with 181 cases in Tirana only.

The head of the vaccination program at the Public Health Institute, Erida Nelaj said that out of 30 thousand people were vaccinated under a nation-wide vaccination campaign to contain and eradicate the measles virus.

The World Health Organization said last month that cases of measles in Europe quadrupled in 2017, with more than 21,315 people affected and 35 deaths. This year, the disease has affected one in four European countries.
