FM Hoxha says Albania’s future lies in Europe as Maastricht Treaty marks 33 years

TIRANA, Nov. 1 /ATA/ – Albania’s future lies firmly in Europe, the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Ferit Hoxha said on Sunday, marking the 33rd anniversary of the Maastricht Treaty’s entry into force, which laid the foundations for the European Union.

In a social media post, Hoxha said the anniversary was an opportunity for Albania to reaffirm its European aspirations and its ambition to join the EU, take on the responsibilities of membership and help shape the continent’s future.

“Our European identity has deep roots. Today, through domestic reforms and increasingly strong partnerships across Europe, we are gradually turning our European ambition into reality. Our path is clear. Our future is European, and European alone,” Hoxha said.

The Maastricht Treaty, formally known as the Treaty on European Union, was signed in the Dutch city of Maastricht on Feb. 7, 1992, and entered into force on Nov. 1, 1993.

It established the European Union, transforming the European Economic Community (EEC) into a broader political and economic union.
