TIRANA, Oct. 17 /ATA/ – Protesters marched towards the prime minister’s office after spending four hours outside the Education Ministry on Saturday, on the fifth day of demonstrations calling for a change in the country’s political class and better conditions to prevent young people from leaving Albania.
The demonstrators gathered along Martyrs of the Nation Boulevard, where tensions with police flared again.
Police vehicles used water cannons and tear gas after protesters approached the security perimeter, while masked youths continued throwing stones at officers.
Despite the clashes, demonstrators leading the march continued towards the square in front of the prime minister’s office, where a large police presence had been deployed.
Fires caused by pyrotechnic devices could be seen in the streets.
The youth protests entered their fifth consecutive day on Saturday, with demonstrators opposing the country’s political class. The first acts of violence were reported around midday, when masked protesters tore down railings near the Education Ministry and placed them in the middle of the road.
