TIRANA, Oct 12 /ATA/ Extending repayment periods remains the main form of loan restructuring in Albania’s banking system. In the first half of the year, the value of restructured loans reached around ALL 3 billion, marking a significant increase compared with the same period a year earlier.
According to data from the Bank of Albania, the value of restructured loans rose by 140% compared with the first half of 2025. The amount accounted for around 1.3% of new lending during the period and approximately 8% of the stock of non-performing loans (NPLs).
Restructuring has mainly affected foreign-currency loans to businesses. In these cases, banks and borrowers have primarily opted to extend loan maturities, revising the terms for repayment of outstanding liabilities.
Meanwhile, the non-performing loan ratio in the banking system improved compared with a year earlier.
In July 2026, the ratio fell to 3.69%, down from 4.04% in July 2025.
