TIRANA, Oct 10 /ATA/The Shkodër Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage has shared striking photographs of a typical northern Albanian tower, taken during an inspection by specialists at the tower known as Gjelosh Ndoka’s, in the village of Abat, Shalë.
The towers of northern Albania are traditional dwellings characteristic of the country’s northernmost areas, preserving the ethnography and history of their inhabitants over the centuries
In northern Albania, towers were built by combining stone with wood, which was mainly used for roofs, ceilings, intermediate floors and the frames of the small windows typical of northern dwellings. The ground floor was generally reserved for livestock, while the upper floors accommodated residents and guests. The buildings featured internal staircases connecting the floors, although some also had an external flight of stairs, which served residents during the long, cold winter days.
