Kosovo parliament to debate Special Court law changes as protesters gather

PRISHTINA, Oct. 5 /ATA/ – Kosovo’s parliament is due to hold an extraordinary session on Monday to consider proposed amendments to the law governing the country’s Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecutor’s Office, as protesters gathered outside the parliament building in support of the changes.

The parliamentary legislation committee approved the initiative, proposed by the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), by nine votes to none.

Kosovo’s government on Friday cleared the way for the initiative to be submitted to parliament, saying there were no legal obstacles to proceeding with the draft law.

The Specialist Chambers, based in The Hague, were established to prosecute crimes allegedly committed during and shortly after the 1998-99 Kosovo war.

Ahead of Monday’s session, protesters gathered outside parliament in support of the proposed amendments, calling on lawmakers to approve the legislation.

The protest, held under the slogan “Vote for the law,” is taking place as lawmakers are expected to consider the draft in its first reading.

The protesters said the amendments were necessary and called on lawmakers to support the initiative. They said they would remain outside parliament until the parliamentary process was completed.
