TIRANA, October 2 /ATA/ – There is work underway on the restoration and revitalization of the Archangels monastery complex in Derviçan. Restoration work is underway on the eastern and western monastic quarters to return them to use after decades of deterioration.
Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sports Blendi Gonxhja visited this religious site—one of 15 monasteries testifying to the exceptional spiritual and cultural wealth of Gjirokastra region. The minister inspected this initial phase of the project, which entails the reconstruction, restoration and conservation of the monastic quarters through the structural consolidation of the masonry.
“With the church already designated a Category I ‘Cultural Monument,’ these interventions offer a new future for this historic complex, transforming it into a vibrant space for the community and a landmark for visitors and cultural tourism in Dropull,” stated the head of the Ministry.
Archangels monastery is situated on the plateau of Mali i Gjerë, overlooking the village of Derviçan. The monastery is a more recent structure compared to other complexes in this valley, yet it possesses significant value and bears witness to the development and typological diversity of post-Byzantine architecture. The Archangels monastery complex consists of the church and the monastic quarters surrounding it, primarily on the eastern and western sides. /p.s./
