Skampa Theatre Festival opens in Elbasan with Izmir State Theatre’s “Medea”

TIRANA, Oct. 2 /ATA/ – The 28th edition of Albania’s International Skampa Theatre Festival opened in the central city of Elbasan with “Medea”, a production by Türkiye’s Izmir State Theatre directed by Adonis Filipi.

The festival is one of Elbasan’s major cultural events, bringing theatre companies from Albania and abroad to the central Albanian city.

Based on Euripides’ classical tragedy, the production presents the story of a betrayed woman whose passion and pain turn into revenge. Movement, rhythm and visual elements are combined in a production that has remained part of the Turkish theatre’s repertoire for six years.

Turkish actress Asli Kilian plays the title role, portraying Medea as a powerful and complex character in one of the best-known works of world drama.

This year’s festival is being held under the theme “To Be”, highlighting presence, coexistence and the ability of art to bring people together across borders.

The programme features theatre companies from Albania, North Macedonia, Italy, Tunisia, the United States, Moldova and Türkiye, presenting 10 productions alongside performances, workshops, exhibitions and book launches.

Elbasan Mayor Gledian Llatja praised the festival’s 28-year tradition and its contribution to the city’s cultural life, saying Elbasan remained a city that valued theatre, artists and culture.

The Skampa International Theatre Festival runs through October 5.
