Von der Leyen: Corruption investigations demonstrate that the system is working

TIRANA, Sept 30 /ATA/ European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said today that the fight against corruption and organised crime is at the heart of the European integration process, describing investigations into senior officials demonstrate that the justice system is functioning.

Asked at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama about corruption investigations and how the EU views such developments in the context of the accession process, von der Leyen said they demonstrated the strengthening of Albania’s judicial system.

“The fight against corruption and organised crime is crucial and lies at the heart of our work. The fact that cases are being investigated is evidence that the system is functioning,” she said.

“So, in reply to your question, I believe what we are seeing is the strengthening of the judicial system,” the European Commission president said.
