Rama: Right to veto does not serve interests of EU or its member states

TIRANA, Sept 30/ATA/-By Maela Marini/ Prime Minister Edi Rama said today that the right to veto does not serve the interests of the European Union or its member states.

Speaking at a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Rama said Albania had repeatedly been affected by the use of the veto, describing it as an outdated mechanism in today’s circumstances.

Meanwhile, Rama said that “we will look at how future accession treaties will be drafted”, noting that previous treaties for former candidate countries that have since become EU members included certain safeguards.

“It is a good thing that we are aware of this, and we will consider how such safeguards can be incorporated into future accession treaties. The commitments made during the accession process should continue to apply after a country becomes an EU member. We will therefore keep working on this issue and continue the discussion going forward,” Rama said.

The Prime Minister also said Albania would not need to use the veto to assert itself at the table of a family in which it should feel privileged to be a member on an equal footing with other members.
