TIRANA, Sept 25 /ATA/- By Maela Marini/ Prime Minister Edi Rama declared in New York that Europe and the United States have never been more divided than they are today. Speaking at a gala hosted by the Council for Albanian‑American Relations, he warned of another rift damaging the world — divisions within major powers that are meant to show the way forward.
Rama, speaking in New York, said divisions are not confined to the Balkans but are evident across the globe. He argued that Europe and the United States have never been more divided, adding that he has never seen America, France or Germany so fractured, nor any democratic country truly united.
The PM said we are part of a great club, yet all are divided.
“There is worse still. Our young people are even more divided than our countries — and worse again, the minds of our children are fragmented. While we struggle to understand how to defend our nations, how to protect our democracies, how to safeguard our cherished club, NATO, from enemy missiles, how to build iron domes, golden domes, how to construct shields to keep us safe in an imagined war of the future, we have left the minds of our children without any protection,” Rama added.
He argued that the enemies of our countries no longer need to pursue us with missiles; rather, they strike by infiltrating the minds of our young people hour by hour, through mobile telephones and social media.
Prime Minister Edi Rama said civilisation no longer reflects the finest education, conduct or communication, but has descended into barbarism. He argued that while adversaries shield their societies, the West has left its children’s minds exposed. Rama stressed he is not advocating the closure of social media or curtailment of free expression, but warned that truth has never been more neglected, abused or consumed in the name of falsehood, manipulation and malice.”
Prime Minister Rama acknowledged that Albanians have long endured divisions that ultimately harm themselves. Speaking in New York, he warned that another fracture now damages the wider world — the divisions within major powers expected to guide others and keep the torch burning. He said it is for those nations to decide their path, while Albanians will remain Albanians.
