Berisha says he raised Albanian opposition concerns during U.S. visit

TIRANA, Sept. 14 /ATA/ – Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha said on Monday that he had raised the Albanian opposition’s concerns over democracy, the rule of law and organised crime during meetings with members of the U.S. Congress and officials of President Donald Trump’s administration.

Speaking at a news conference about his recent visit to the United States, Berisha said the talks focused on what he described as the impact of a “narco-state” on Albania’s economy, constitutional order and rule of law.

“At the centre of all our discussions with congressmen, senators and senior officials of the Trump administration were, first and foremost, the narco-state and its devastating consequences for Albania’s economy, society, constitutional order and rule of law,” Berisha said.

He said the meetings also addressed what he called the history of Albania’s transformation into a “narco-state,” which he attributed to policies pursued by Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Berisha described the visit as an effort to present the opposition’s concerns to U.S. partners, saying the discussions focused on issues affecting Albanian citizens, democracy, elections and the rule of law rather than personal matters.

He also said the opposition had presented what he called evidence of an “electoral farce” and the alleged involvement of drug-trafficking groups in the electoral process.
