PM Rama denies government role in social media restrictions, calls allegations propaganda

TIRANA, Sept. 3 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama on Thursday denied allegations that his government had intervened to deactivate or restrict the social media accounts of people linked to recent protests, saying the state has neither a role in platform decisions nor the technical capacity to carry out such operations.

In a post on social media platform X, the government head said he has lived with “blame and shame games” by political opponents throughout his career and criticised what he described as propaganda by people presenting themselves as European democrats.

“Let me be clear: we have absolutely nothing to do with the deactivation or restriction of any social media account, nor do we have the technical capacity to carry out an operation of this kind,” Rama said.

He dismissed allegations of sophisticated censorship of protest-related profiles and said neither his government nor, in his view, the overwhelming majority of countries had the capacity to carry out such an operation.

Rama also accused unnamed opponents of attempting to revive what he described as a protest movement that had lost momentum, linking the allegations to what he called the so-called “Flamingo Revolution”.

He said the claims were part of a broader campaign of misinformation against his government.
