TIRANA, August 31/ATA/ Citizens and civil society activists gathered in front of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tirana today for the 93rd consecutive day, continuing their ongoing protests against the Zvërnec investment project.
Just like every other night, the protesters gathered in the beginning at “Skanderbeg” square to continue the march towards the Prime Minister’s Office.
The protesters opposed the planned project in Zvërnec area, while during the protest they also presented a series of demands related to the protection of protected areas, strategic investments and government policies.
In addition to Zvërnec issue, the protesters demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, the removal of what they describe as the “old” political caste, the repeal of the changes to the law on protected areas and the amendment of the electoral law.
Activist Ilir Xhemalaj warned during his speech delivered on the podium in front of the Prime Minister’s Office that the protests against the government will escalate and called for mobilization and civil disobedience.
Xhemalaj said that the protesters will continue to remain in the square and that a new phase of protests is expected in the fall.
Started as a reaction to the alleged environmental impact of the tourist project in Zvërnec, the protest has now assumed a broader political and institutional character, with participants also raising concerns about corruption, employment and the young people leaving the country. /m.m/r.e/p.s./
