Tirana sees 79th consecutive protest, demands remain unchanged

TIRANA, Aug 17 /ATA/ The 79th consecutive protest against the Zvërnec investment project is being held in Tirana today.

After gathering in Skënderbej Square, protesters marched to the Prime Minister’s Office, where speakers reiterated calls for Prime Minister Edi Rama’s resignation, an end to the “old political establishment”, the repeal of changes to the protected areas law and amendments to the electoral law, among other demands.

Activist Sidorela Vatnikaj said the square in front of the Prime Minister’s Office had become a symbol of unity for Albanians at home and abroad, who want the country to no longer be governed by autocrats and MPs with alleged criminal links.

What began as a protest against the environmental impact of the tourism project in Zvërnec has evolved into broader calls for political and institutional change, with participants also raising concerns about corruption, meritocracy, employment opportunities and the emigration of young people.
