TIRANA, July 31 /ATA/ The citizens’ protest in Tirana entered its 62nd day, having started as a demonstration against the investment project in Zvërnec before expanding into broader demands for the government to step down and for Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign.
After gathering in Skënderbej Square, protesters marched towards the Prime Minister’s Office along “Dëshmorët e Kombit” Boulevard, voicing their opposition to the project while also raising broader concerns over policies concerning protected areas and strategic investments.
A citizen who said he had travelled from the Nikaj-Mërtur area described the protest as one led by young people.
“When citizens are no longer convinced by a greedy government, the people become impossible to control. This protest is showing the younger generation and citizens that we are not afraid of freedom. We have no reason to fear freedom. This generation of young people should not be afraid either; it is demanding that the law be upheld,” he said.
Another protester said the demonstration was also laying bare dissatisfaction among Socialist Party supporters.
“They are the ones breaking the promises they made to their own supporters, not to me because I do not belong to them. This protest represents major support for Albanians,” he said.
Carrying banners and national flags, protesters called for the repeal of amendments to the law on protected areas, changes to the electoral law and the replacement of what they described as the “old political establishment”.
On the 62nd day of the protest, demonstrators reiterated that they would continue holding daily gatherings and marches.
