Bank of Albania strengthened monetary and financial stability in 2025

TIRANA, July 8 /ATA/ Bank of Albania Governor Gent Sejko said the central bank continued to strengthen monetary and financial stability in 2025 by implementing parliament’s recommendations and further aligning its regulatory framework with European Union standards.

Reporting to the Parliamentary Committee on Citizens’ Initiatives, Cooperation and Institutional Oversight on the implementation of parliament’s recommendations and the Bank of Albania’s activities in 2025, Sejko said monetary policy remained focused on maintaining price stability, while policymaking was underpinned by more in-depth analysis and more comprehensive data.

During this period, monetary policy has been driven by data and our main objective of preserving price stability. It has been a prudent and flexible approach, guided by evidence and implemented within our legal mandate, the governor said.

Sejko said inflation averaged 2.2% in 2025, staying close to the 3% target, and added that forecasts point to continued stability in the period ahead.

Sejko said the Bank of Albania remained committed to a free-floating exchange rate regime, attributing the lek’s appreciation to stronger tourism revenues, remittances, foreign investment and an improved external balance.

He added that the central bank’s interventions in the foreign exchange market were not intended to target a specific exchange rate level, but to limit excessive volatility and mitigate risks to monetary and financial stability.

According to Sejko, Albania’s foreign exchange reserves reached around 7.3 billion euros at the end of 2025, while the banking sector maintained sound indicators, with non-performing loans falling to 3.8%, the lowest level since 2008.

The governor also highlighted progress made in 2025 towards European financial integration, including Albania’s accession to the SEPA area and the modernisation of payment systems.

“In all cases, our goal has remained the same: greater stability, more security and greater clarity for citizens, businesses and markets. The Bank of Albania will continue to act with independence, responsibility and prudence, in support of monetary and financial stability and Albania’s European path,” Sejko concluded.
