TIRANA, July 6 /ATA/The Democratic Party chairman, Sali Berisha, reported to the Special Anti‑Corruption and Organized Crime Prosecution (SPAK) on Monday, complying with a court order linked to the “Partizani” case.
Outside the building, he commented on the daily protests in Tirana, stressing that they were not organised by his party but had the full backing of the opposition.
Berisha said the Democratic Party’s stance from the beginning had been not to interfere in the running of the protests, warning that any attempt to manipulate or claim ownership of them would be unacceptable.
He explained that the party fully supports the five demands put forward by demonstrators adding this backing had been offered without party symbols or political branding. Berisha added that the protests had also received backing from the European People’s Party.
Asked about slogans and calls for his removal from the leadership of the opposition, Sali Berisha dismissed them as efforts by what he described as the “opposition of the opposition,” acting in the interests of the government.
He described these voices as attempts to take advantage of the protests with such slogans, but insisted they had not prevented, and would not prevent, the Democratic Party from strongly supporting the demonstrations. Berisha said the party remained committed to backing the protests with full force, and that this had not discouraged its members from attending in large numbers.
