TIRANA, July 2 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama reacted today to the acts of violence during the protest in front of the Parliament.
According to him, the beautiful protest of citizenship has now given way to the old film of conflict, quarrel, and violence.
“What began as a beautiful protest of citizenship, patriotism, and purity has now turned into the same old story of conflict, quarrels, and violence, where the claws of failed and angry politics are once again showing their characteristic filth,” Rama wrote on social media.
As Members of Parliament were arriving for the start of the plenary session, tensions outside the building quickly escalated. Protesters, gathered in front of the Parliament, initially expressed their anger by throwing flour and eggs at the cars carrying MPs.
The situation intensified when demonstrators clashed directly with police forces. In the scuffle, protesters managed to dismantle part of the metal barricade that had been set up to contain the crowd.
The clashes continued with protesters throwing stones and hard objects at the police, where two officers were injured.
The police responded to attempts to remove the fence with pepper spray. It is reported that several protesters were injured and received medical assistance.
