TIRANA, June 30 /ATA/ – Main opposition Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha on Tuesday condemned what he described as police violence against protesters following clashes outside parliament, accusing authorities of using excessive force against demonstrators.
In a statement, Berisha denounced the police response as “brutal violence” and said the government was attempting to silence citizens instead of addressing their demands.
He said the use of force against what he described as peaceful protesters, as well as their detention, reflected “the government’s fear and arrogance.”
“Brutal savagery. I strongly condemn the violence and arrogance of the State Police towards citizens exercising their right to protest. When a government responds to its citizens not with arguments but with force, it demonstrates fear, not strength. Violence against peaceful protesters and attempts to silence their voices are clear signs of the arrogance of power and of a government that is losing its legitimacy in the eyes of its citizens,” Berisha stated, calling for the immediate release of detained protesters.
