TIRANA, June 25 /ATA/ – Democratic Party (DP) said on Thursday it supported an ongoing youth-led protest movement, describing it as a response to what it called a deep political and institutional crisis in Albania.
In a statement, the main opposition party said it also welcomed a letter signed by 260 Albanian academics, scientists and other professionals living abroad in support of the protesters’ demands.
DP said the letter represented a call for Albanians at home and abroad to back the movement.
The opposition argued that the protests offered a path toward addressing political and governance concerns, which it attributes to the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
The ruling Socialist Party has rejected opposition criticism and has disputed claims made by opposition parties regarding the protests and their demands.
The protests have become the latest source of tension between Albania’s government and opposition, which remain divided over issues including governance, electoral standards and corruption.
