Protest against Zvërnec tourism project enters 23rd consecutive day

TIRANA, June 22 /ATA/ – Protesters gathered again on Monday in Tirana for a 23rd consecutive day of demonstrations against a planned tourism development in the coastal area of Zvërnec, southern Albania.

After assembling in the city centre, demonstrators marched towards the Prime Minister’s Office, chanting slogans and carrying flags and banners calling for the project to be halted.

The rally began in Tirana’s main Skanderbeg Square, where participants sang the national anthem before citizens and activists took turns addressing the crowd.

Protesters reiterated their opposition to the Zvërnec tourism project and presented a list of demands they described as non-negotiable.

Among their key demands are the resignation of the Prime Minister, the repeal of legislation on “strategic investors,” the abolition of the so-called “Mountain Package,” and the reversal of amendments to laws on protected areas and cultural heritage.

During the rally, organizers outlined what he said were the official demands agreed with participants after consultations during the protest.

The platform also calls for the formation of a 12-month transitional, non-party technical government, the drafting of a new constitution to be approved by referendum, and reforms to the electoral code and political party financing rules. It further proposes limiting the prime minister’s mandate to a maximum of two terms over a lifetime.

Organisers also reiterated their opposition to previously adopted legal changes concerning protected areas, cultural heritage, strategic investments and related regulatory frameworks.

They said the protest would continue peacefully until their demands are met.
