TIRANA, June 22 /ATA/ – Main opposition Democratic Party has requested a parliamentary debate on the latest European Commission’s 2025 report on Albania, arguing that concerns highlighted by European institutions require immediate attention from lawmakers.
The request, submitted by Democratic Party parliamentary group chairman Gazment Bardhi, cites a series of issues that the opposition says were raised by the European Parliament, including the lack of a level playing field for political actors, the misuse of administrative resources, political party financing, allegations of vote-buying and pressure on voters.
In its submission, the Democratic Party highlighted calls for the ruling majority and the opposition to pursue a comprehensive and inclusive electoral reform process, in cooperation with civil society, and to fully implement outstanding recommendations from the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the Venice Commission ahead of future elections.
The opposition also pointed to concerns over persistent political polarisation and confrontational rhetoric, arguing that these undermine parliamentary oversight, public trust and the effective functioning of democratic institutions.
According to the request, the European Commission’s report encourages political actors to return to constructive parliamentary dialogue and stresses the importance of meaningful opposition participation in legislative procedures.
