Rama: Albania is shifting into new era of elite tourism, drawing travelers who spend more

TIRANA, June 19 /ATA/ Albania’s era of mass-market tourism has laid the groundwork. Now, the country is shifting its focus to quality, prioritizing higher revenues and premium, high-spending tourists.

During the inauguration event of the new Tirana-Toronto line at the “Mother Teresa” International Airport, Rama emphasized that the sector must transition to a high-yield approach, focusing on quality over volume to maximize economic impact and grassroots community benefits.

“Albania has successfully concluded its phase of rapid tourism expansion and must urgently shift its strategic focus toward quality, heritage preservation, and year-round sustainability,” stated Rama.

Comparative data reveals that surging tourist numbers do not automatically translate to proportional revenue increases. As the Prime Minister noted, while visitor volume spikes rapidly, revenues lag behind, and infrastructure and public service costs skyrocket. When we weigh this slow-growing income against the steep expenses caused by mass tourism—which burdens our traffic, sanitation, waste management, water, sewage, and environment—the economic math simply doesn’t add up.

Further on, the prime minister said that some mistakenly wonder why we need luxury tourism if locals cannot access these high-end resorts. “In reality, attracting wealthy visitors is the best way to generate revenue. The more affluent guests we host, the more income flows into our communities, businesses, and state treasury. We must continue growing our tourism sector, ensuring it brings tangible wealth to Albanian families and the national economy,” concluded PM Rama.
