Protesters rally for 16th day against planned Zvërnec development

TIRANA, June 15 /ATA/ – Activists, civil society representatives and supporters of various political causes gathered in central Tirana on Monday for a protest against a planned development project in the coastal area of Zvërnec, southern Albania, marking the 16th rally against the investment.

Participants assembled in Skanderbeg Square before marching along the capital’s main Martyrs of the Nation Boulevard toward the Prime Minister’s office, carrying banners and calling for greater protection of natural resources and public assets.

Protesters also voiced broader political demands, including calls for Prime Minister Edi Rama’s resignation, the departure of opposition leader Sali Berisha from party leadership, and investigations into politicians’ assets.

Organizers said the march would remain peaceful and would not block the main road linking Tirana to the country’s international airport.

“We will not block tourists or the airport, where our brothers and sisters from the diaspora arrive. We only want the departure of this political establishment,” activist Alben Kola told supporters before the march.

Speakers at the rally called for greater public participation in the movement and accused Albania’s political establishment of failing to protect national interests and public assets.

The planned investment in Zvërnec, a coastal area near the southern city of Vlora, has sparked a series of protests by environmental activists and local residents concerned about its potential impact on the area’s natural environment.
