TIRANA, June 13 /ATA/ – Theatre director Mario Banushi has been awarded the Silver Lion at the 54th edition of the Venice Biennale International Theatre Festival, earning recognition at one of the world’s most prestigious arts events.
In its citation, the jury praised Banushi’s work for “breaking free from the conventions of traditional narrative theatre while preserving a classical sensibility in image-making, deeply nourished by personal memory.
In a post on social media on Saturday, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Blendi Gonxhja described the award as an outstanding achievement for an artist with Albanian roots on the international stage and highlighted the importance of promoting emerging talent in contemporary arts.
Gonxhja said Banushi belongs to a new generation of artists gaining prominence across Europe through an original, poetic and deeply human theatrical language.
“This award confirms his exceptional talent and the importance of new voices in the development of contemporary theatre,” the Minister said.
