TIRANA, May 29 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Friday that the ruling Socialist Party (SP) is the only political force in the country with a consistently clear relationship with Albania’s national interest.
Speaking at an event marking the 35th anniversary of SP in the northeastern district of Diber, the government head said Socialists had demonstrated throughout its history an ability to distance itself from Albania’s communist past while maintaining what he called a responsible and pro-European political course.
“SP has proven more than once that it is the only political force with a crystal-clear relationship with the national interest,” Rama said.
He said the party’s modern political identity was forged when Albanian socialists and progressives chose to break with the country’s past and establish a new political formation following the collapse of communism.
He contrasted the Socialists’ record with that of their political opponents, accusing them of contributing to instability and political conflict during Albania’s post-communist transition.
The Prime Minister also revisited accusations made against SP and its former leader Fatos Nano during the Kosovo war, when opponents alleged the party had maintained links with Belgrade.
He said Socialist-led governments had openly supported the Kosovo Liberation Army and Kosovo’s liberation effort.
Rama also defended the Socialist Party’s stance on Albania’s communist-era legacy, saying the party had clearly distanced itself from dictatorship without, in his words, distorting the historical significance of Albania’s anti-fascist National Liberation War.
He further described the party’s relationship with society and the international community as grounded in civic values, European principles and respect for individual freedoms and rights.
