Bergner: Independent judiciary a prerequisite for Albania’s EU accession progress

TIRANA, May 29  /ATA/ The German Ambassador to Albania, Karl Bergner, stated at an event that “an independent, professional, and efficient judiciary constitutes a central and indispensable prerequisite for Albania’s continued progress towards the European Union.”

Ambassador Bergner further emphasised that the recent confirmation of the fulfilment of interim benchmarks for EU accession represents, in this context, recognition of the progress achieved thus far in this area, particularly by the negotiating team, while also serving as encouragement for further reforms and the sustained implementation of the 2016 justice reform, which he described as irreversible.

“Today’s survey sheds light on how Albanian citizens perceive the justice reform, which is intended to serve them,” said Karl Bergner.

The statement was made yesterday during the presentation by Dr. Eduard Zaloshnja of the results of a new nationwide survey on Albania’s justice system.

The study, carried out for the Centre for the Study of Democracy and Governance, was financed by the German Embassy.

The German Embassy praised the researchers and expressed optimism that the findings would encourage further reform efforts.
