PM Rama: Socialist Party has never compromised on national interest

TIRANA, May 25 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama stated on Monday that the ruling Socialist Party has never compromised when it came to defending Albania’s national interests.

Speaking at an event in Durres marking the 35th anniversary of the Socialist Party, Rama said the party had carried the protection of national interests “in its DNA” since its founding.

“The Socialist Party has had, from the very beginning, a relationship with the national interest embedded in its DNA, making it the only political force in these 35 years that has never wavered when it comes to defending the national interest,” Rama said.

Rama also referred to the period of international sanctions against Serbia during the Kosovo war, accusing political opponents who had once labelled the Socialist Party “Belgrade’s party” of supporting the breaking of the oil embargo imposed on former Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic.

“Those who at the time cursed the Socialist Party as ‘Belgrade’s party’ were the same people who praised the breaking of the embargo on Milosevic and profited by selling oil to Milosevic’s ethnic-cleansing machinery,” Rama said.

He said the Socialist Party had been the political force that supported “the Kosovo Liberation Army unreservedly and in every possible way,” Rama said.
