TIRANA, May 19 /ATA/ The General Director of the State Police, Chief Director Skënder Hita, stated during today’s interinstitutional meeting held in Sarandë that no individual stands above the law and that the uniform of the State Police shall never serve as a shield for illegal activity.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Interior, Besfort Lamallari, together with representatives of the National Inspectorate for the Protection of Territory and local institutions responsible for strengthening territorial oversight and ensuring public safety in coastal areas. In his remarks, Hita emphasized that the State Police is an institution committed to the enforcement of the law, the protection of citizens, and service to the public.
Hita emphasized that the State Police is committed to upholding the law and maintaining public trust, stressing that no one is above the law and that the police uniform will never be used to protect illegal activity.
The State Police director general expressed concern and determination following the arrest of police officials suspected of facilitating illegal construction, noting the gravity of misconduct within a key local police directorate.
“This is unacceptable to the integrity of the State Police. It is unacceptable to me, as General Director of the State Police, for a police officer to become complicit with those who violate the law. Anyone who wears the uniform of the State Police must stand on the side of the law and the citizens, not on the side of illegality,” he further stated.
Hita noted that when a police officer or any law enforcement official breaches the law, the damage goes beyond the institution itself, eroding public trust in both the state and the justice system. He stressed that such cases require an immediate, decisive, and uncompromising response.
At the same time, he underlined that the misconduct of a few individuals does not represent the State Police as a whole. He reaffirmed that the State Police remains fully committed to preventing and addressing illegal construction and all other forms of unlawful activity, consistently and without compromise.
Hita emphasized that preventing illegal construction is not the responsibility of the State Police alone. While the police have the primary role in enforcing the law, he stressed that effectively addressing the issue requires ongoing cooperation and coordination among all relevant institutions.
According to Hita, the IMT, the Municipal Police, the National Inspectorate for the Protection of Territory (IKMT), local government authorities, and all other relevant institutions must maintain close and continuous cooperation in order to promptly prevent any instances of illegality.
He further emphasized that any institution which receives indications, information, or detects unlawful activity must act without delay and in coordination with the relevant actors, ensuring that no space is left for tolerance or administrative delay.
