Jaupaj: Albania secures €40 million from the GEF for environmental projects

TIRANA, May 7/ATA/ Minister of Environment Sofjan Jaupaj stated today that Albania has secured 40 million Euros to implement its climate change project, under the ALBAdapt program, which is considered the largest climate project being implemented in the Western Balkans.

During a press conference with journalists, Jaupaj said that no other country in the European Union or the Western Balkans currently has such a project financed by the Global Environment Facility.

Focusing on the three-day climate conference that brought representatives of European institutions and global environmental organizations to Albania, Jaupaj underlined that, “This event marks a historic turning point for our country. By anchoring this annual platform in Albania, we are establishing ourselves as the driving force behind the Western Balkans’ green transition”.

“With support from North Macedonia, Albania has secured a 50 million Euros Green Climate Fund grant for a new forestry project, pending final approval,” he said.

According to Jaupaj, the funds will bolster nursery production, restore fire-and-erosion-damaged areas and strengthen forest management capacity.

The minister announced that the ministry he heads has approved four new regional forestry agencies that are being established to bolster local management, featuring a state enterprise model based on European best practices.

According to Jaupaj, the national registration of Albania’s 1.2 million hectares of forest is complete, exceeding average EU figures for forested area.

The National Climate Change Plan 2026-2036 outlines 66 priority measures to strengthen national resilience against climate impacts, including floods and fires. /e.i/j.p/p.s./
