TIRANA, May 5/ATA/ Chairman of the Democratic Party in opposition Sali Berisha welcomed today the report approved by the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee on Albania praising the report’s objective and valuable findings.
During a press conference from the Blue Headquarters, Berisha said that the report offers a comprehensive analysis of the nation’s challenges, along with crucial recommendations for both government and opposition. The Democratic Party is fully committed to implementing these findings, emphasized Berisha.
According to DP chairman, “This report highlights that we need to ensure legislation is enforced, not just a dead letter”.
Berisha noted that while the report deems the legal framework suitable for competitive elections, it raises serious concerns regarding uneven playing fields, the misuse of state resources, and the merging of state institutions with party structures. This highlights that despite a sound legal framework, the elections were marred by unequal competition and the blurring of lines between party and state.
According to him, the elections were branded a total farce, with the opposition highlighting a ‘party-state’ machinery, rampant vote-buying and intense pressure on the electorate.
In conclusion, Berisha urged continued, constructive electoral reform, pledging to meet EU requirements. /m.q/j.p/p.s./
