PRISHTINA, April 30 /ATA/ – The European Union has expressed regret that political parties in Kosovo failed to agree on a unifying figure for the country’s next president, leading to a third election cycle in less than a year and a half.
An EU spokesperson told Radio Free Europe on Thursday that the bloc has consistently called on all political actors to ensure institutional stability.
“It is urgent for Kosovo to strengthen cross-party dialogue to ensure the effective functioning of institutions and avoid missing opportunities that benefit citizens, including those under the Growth Plan,” the spokesperson said.
Kosovo’s parliament failed to elect a new president within the constitutional deadline, and following a recent Constitutional Court ruling, the Assembly was dissolved on April 28.
Earlier today, acting President Albulena Haxhiu set June 7 early parliamentary elections after consultations with political parties.
The political deadlock follows repeated failed attempts in parliament to reach consensus on a presidential candidate, with disagreements between the ruling party and the opposition over nominations and institutional balance.
Opposition parties have rejected proposals to support non-partisan candidates, while the ruling party has said it sought compromise solutions, including shared governance arrangements, which were not accepted.
The situation comes amid continued political tensions over institutional control and the constitutional process for electing a president.
