TIRANA, March 28 /ATSH/ – Albania is preparing a new programme to expand access to affordable housing, particularly for young families unable to purchase homes at current market prices, Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Saturday.
Speaking at a Socialist Party meeting in Tirana, Rama said the government is working to increase capacity in the housing market beyond traditional social housing schemes.
“We are aware of the need to create new capacity in the housing market, not only for vulnerable groups but also for what is known as affordable housing,” Rama said. “We are talking about young families who want to own an apartment but find it impossible under current conditions.”
He noted that the challenge reflects broader global trends, not only in Albania, and said the government is developing a dedicated programme to address it.
Rama added that the government has already introduced state-guaranteed loan schemes for key public sector workers, including police officers, teachers, doctors and nurses, to help them purchase homes.
“These are initial steps, but they show we are creating opportunities,” he said.
The prime minister also announced a new initiative, dubbed “Double Your Business,” which will provide state-guaranteed loans to small and medium-sized enterprises with viable growth plans.
The programme aims to support entrepreneurs seeking financing to expand their operations and is expected to be launched in the near future, Rama said.
