Albania, Romania seek closer defense cooperation

TIRANA, March 27 /ATA/ – Albania’s Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Arben Kingji, on Friday paid an official visit to Romania aimed at strengthening bilateral military cooperation and joint commitments within NATO.

Kingji was received with an official ceremony by his Romanian counterpart, General Gheorghiță Vlad, in talks reflecting what both sides described as a stable and consolidated defence partnership.

Talks focused on boosting interoperability through joint exercises, exchanges of experience and deeper cooperation within bilateral and regional initiatives.

The two sides also discussed recent developments in the regional and international security environment, with particular attention to hybrid threats, asymmetric risks and the need for a coordinated response within NATO.

Kingji highlighted the importance of participation in NATO-led missions and operations, praising the role of Romanian armed forces in maintaining regional and broader security.

During the visit, Kingji toured the Multinational Corps South-East headquarters (MNC-SE) in Sibiu alongside Vlad, where he was briefed on the role of allied forces deployed in Romania and the command’s contribution to NATO’s eastern flank.

He described the corps as a key element of NATO’s command and control structure and a practical example of multinational cooperation and collective defence.

The visit was seen by both sides as a step forward in deepening military ties and reaffirming a shared commitment to peace, stability and security in the region and beyond.
