Albania presents progress on gender equality at UN

TIRANA, March 14/ATA/ Albania’s Minister of Health and Social Welfare Evis Sala presented today to the 70th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) in New York the progress made in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in our country.

In her remarks, Sala emphasized that, ” The health of our democracy and institutions is best measured by our commitment to gender equality, especially as women rights face global backlash”.

She highlighted the fact that Albania has undertaken important legal and institutional reforms in line with international commitments and in context of the European integration process.

The introduction of the 2025 Gender Equality Law signifies a major step forward. The new law provides for a minimum representation threshold of 30% and aims to achieve full gender equality by 2035.

Likewise, Albania has made significant progress in the representation of women in politics and decision-making.

Currently, women represent 35% of the Albanian Parliament, over 40% of the government and more than 40% of municipal councilors.

The minister also highlighted the significance of strengthening mechanisms for preventing and addressing violence against women, as well as expanding the network of support services for survivors.

In conclusion, she reconfirmed Albania’s commitment to continue efforts to guarantee the full and equal participation of women in public life and decision-making, a foundational pillar of democratic sustainability and inclusive growth.
