Bozdo: Draft Law to ensure legal mechanism for fuel price control

TIRANA, March 13 /ATA/ Eno Bozdo, Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Economy Committee, announced on Friday that the parliamentary group of the Democratic Party intends to submit a bill to the Assembly obligating the government to adopt pre-established regulatory measures to monitor and control fuel price hikes.

During a press conference at the seat of the Parliamentary Presidency, Deputy Chairman Bozdo highlighted that the proposed legislation seeks to establish a legally binding mechanism intended to support the national economy.

Bozdo announced that the Democratic Party parliamentary group will submit a draft law obligating the government to implement automatic measures to control fuel prices during energy crises caused by global developments or force majeure. He emphasized that the legislation seeks to protect citizens and the national economy when the government fails to act, fulfilling the opposition’s responsibility to provide a legal remedy.

Bozdo stated that the proposal comes at a critical time, urging the government to take emergency measures to curb rising fuel prices. He criticized the government for not using additional revenues from higher fuel prices to support citizens and the economy and highlighted the legal requirement for Albanian companies to maintain oil reserves in compliance with the International Energy Agency and relevant EU directives.

Bozdo criticized the Albanian government for failing to prepare or activate emergency oil reserves, noting that while other countries in the region and the EU are taking swift action to protect citizens and their economies, Albania has not implemented any such measures.

The DP MP urged the National Competition Authority to closely monitor companies’ behavior in the market and intervene if instances of cartel behavior or abuse in fuel pricing, as well as in basic food products, are identified.”
