TIRANA, March 7 /ATA-By Maela Marini/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Saturday that recent protests organised by the main opposition Democratic Party are aimed at damaging Albania’s international image by circulating images of unrest abroad.
Speaking during a meeting with local residents affected by the Librazhd–Përrenjas road landslide, Rama said the opposition’s goal was to generate scenes of fires and violence to portray a negative picture of the country.
He warned that Albania should avoid repeating moments in its history when, as he put it, internal divisions prevented the country from taking major steps forward.
According to Rama, images from protests are used to discourage tourism, investment and international confidence in the country.
Addressing corruption allegations, the government head said corruption remains a problem but argued that it is being fought more strongly than ever. He said most corruption cases currently being investigated relate to earlier government mandates and added that Albania is doing more to combat corruption than other countries in the region.
