Berisha: Opposition protest was strongest since Feb. 20, 1991

TIRANA, Feb 21 /ATA/ – A day after a nationwide opposition protest in Tirana, Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha said Saturday the rally was the most powerful demonstration seen in Albania since Feb. 20, 1991.

Speaking to citizens on social media, Berisha described the protest as a “day of triumph for the undefeated peaceful uprising,” calling it a peak moment in the confrontation with the government.

He said the demonstration quickly made the headlines not only in Albanian media but also in major outlets in Germany, France, Britain, Austria and the United States.

“DP is in a peaceful uprising. Not a single member of the security forces was injured during our protests,” Berisha said, adding that the rally was not solely an opposition event but “a protest of every Albanian, for dignity.”

Berisha said the protest represented a vital mission centered on free elections, the fight against corruption and Albania’s European integration, expressing confidence that the opposition would fulfill this mission “with dignity.”
