Albania, WB explore national programme to boost local economic development and tourism

TIRANA, Feb 13 /ATA/ – Albanian government is working with the World Bank on a new national programme aimed at supporting sustainable local economic development, with a particular focus on tourism, State Minister for Local Government Ervin Demo said on Friday.

Demo said discussions were under way with senior representatives of the World Bank Group on designing the initiative.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to the museum city of Berat alongside Ming Zhang, the World Bank Group’s Global Director for Urban, Subnational Finance, Tourism, and Disaster Management, Demo highlighted the importance of investments that link tourism development with territorial planning and local economies.

“New investments in this sector bring direct benefits to citizens and strengthen the economic potential of communities,” he said.

Zhang welcomed the cooperation with the Albanian government and municipalities, saying that well-managed investments can generate employment opportunities, boost tourism and support local economic growth.

The proposed national programme aims to create sustainable opportunities for citizens and local businesses, enhance inter-institutional cooperation and reinforce economic development at the community level, according to the Minister.
