Opposition MP: Albania has fallen back on economic security, integration

TIRANA, Feb 5 /ATA/ – Main opposition Democratic Party (DP) lawmaker Jorida Tabaku claimed Thursday Albania has taken steps backwards on economic security and European integration in recent years.

Tabaku attended a security conference in the United States alongside other opposition lawmakers, holding high-level discussions with U.S. members of Congress and representatives from the Western Balkans on emerging security challenges in an increasingly complex global environment.

In remarks shared on social media, the opposition lawmaker said the discussions focused on three key pillars: economic security, the European integration process and the protection of critical infrastructure, which she said have become central elements of national security, particularly for countries such as Albania.

She said setbacks in these areas undermine Albania’s commitments within NATO and weaken its credibility as a strategic partner.

Tabaku also stressed the importance of strong mechanisms to monitor financial flows and to steer investment towards Western sources, warning against compromises that could jeopardise national security.

Referring to what she described as scandals involving personal data security and the infiltration of criminal networks, Tabaku said such developments damage Albania’s international standing and risk straining long-term partnerships with allies, particularly the United States.

She said participants at the conference also issued a strong call for advancing Kosovo’s bid for NATO membership, a message she said was conveyed by both the U.S. administration and the U.S. Congress.
