TIRANA, Feb 3 /ATA/ – Interior Minister Albana Koçiu on Tuesday joined an online meeting with representatives of the European Commission and her counterparts from Western Balkan countries to discuss the implementation of the European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) in the Schengen area.
The EES is designed to speed up border procedures, reduce waiting times and enhance security through the digitalisation of traveller data.
Koçiu stressed the importance of continued dialogue with European partners to ensure standards that serve citizens and facilitate safer travel to EU member states.
The EU’s Entry/Exit System is a digital registration tool for visitors to Europe, replacing passport stamps with biometric data, including fingerprints and facial images, collected through scanners installed at airports, ports and railway stations across the continent.
The system will record all entries and exits of non-EU nationals travelling for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period, allowing authorities to automatically detect overstays and refusals of entry.
