European Parliament Rapporteur Calls for Mature Political Culture in Albania

TIRANA, Jan 30 /ATA/-By Maela Marini/ European Parliament Rapporteur for Albania, Andreas Schieder, stated on Friday that the country’s political culture must take a step forward and refrain from resorting to dramatic acts, such as the use of Molotov cocktails.

Speaking at a press conference, Schieder emphasized that political actors should engage in robust and substantive debate within the formal political arena.

“This applies to both the opposition and the government. Over 90 percent of Albanian citizens support EU integration. This is the best message Albania can convey to Europe: that it is a united country with a unified approach,” Schieder stated.

Schieder noted that there is currently a consensus in Albania on certain foreign policy issues, while emphasizing that “he would very much like to see the same consensus on European matters.

He also emphasized the necessity of enhancing the country’s political culture.

“In parliament, both opposition and majority members have the opportunity to debate these issues. Such discourse reflects normal democratic practice, where differences of opinion are expected, but the situation should not be exaggerated. Based on my observations, the circumstances are less severe than anticipated. My focus remains on ensuring the proper functioning of a democracy,” he added.
